Frequently Asked Questions
1. What exactly is a Car Detail?
The Services:
Detailing is the craft of cleaning and restoring a vehicle to like-new condition. These services are much more precise and labor-intensive than a car wash. Professional auto detailing is always done by hand, and includes exterior and interior car detailing services. I specialize in thoroughly cleaning inside and outside of the vehicle. High-end exterior detailing like Coatings/PPF/PC and body work are not currently my focus.
lets break it down!
Interior Car Cleaning
Vacuuming – Seats, carpets, mats, headliner, rear cargo area, and trunk are vacuumed to clean debris. Rubber mats are further washed down and a specific coating can be applied to keep them clean.
Scrubbing and Brushing – This is done to agitate stains and stuck debris on floor carpets and mats. Specific cleaner and softer brushes are used to clean the steering wheels, interior trim, center console, and all crevices. Pet hair removal is done with specific brushes prior to extraction.
Liquid Extraction – The carpets and fabric seats are shampooed with a carpet cleaner. Hot water and steam are used to extract residual dirt and stains from the carpets and to remove cleaning products.
Steam Cleaning – A powerful steaming machine is used to clean and sanitize the dash, center console, common touch points, and seats. Steaming is a more effective method of removing tough stains in carpets and seats left after extraction.
Glass Cleaning – Cleaning the windshield and windows.
Leather – A leather cleaner and soap are used to clean any leather parts in the vehicle. A dedicated leather conditioner such as Leatherique is optional after this step.
Exterior Car Cleaning
Exterior Wash and Dry – This washing is started by a pressure washer or hose to remove the first layer of dirt and to soak the car. The vehicle then is given a contact wash by hand with an appropriate car soap. The drying process is done by hand or detailer specific air-dryer. The detailer will spray and wipe down the body of the car with other specialized products. This includes hand washing the rims, door handles, and glass.
Paint Claying – A clay bar is used to remove any deeply imbedded contaminants, overspray, or residue left after the car has been washed. Claying can remove many paint marks and some minor scuffs that otherwise appear more permanent. The result is a cleaner and smoother surface, and helps increase the effectiveness of polish and wax.
Bugs (and Tar) – A standard car wash is usually not enough to removed dried bugs from the front bumper and mirrors. A bug remover (dissolver) is used after an initial rinse to soften and breakdown the bugs. From here they are simply rinsed off or removed with the soap wash of the vehicle, avoiding much more abrasive methods.
Iron decontamination– an iron decontamination spray is used to breakdown iron particles that appear as small orange spots on a vehicles. These small spots are from iron particles being imbedded into the surface of the clear-coat from years of driving. This can be most noticeable on lighter colored vehicles, especially white cars, and is usually concentrated on lower parts of the doors and bottom half of the back. Next tie you see a very light or white vehicle take a close look at these places and you’ll see these particles. A strong iron remover will dissolve almost all of these contaminates. The vehicle is then rinsed with minimal wear on the paint, thus avoiding aggressive brushing.
Polishing – Polishing buffs an mildly abrasive compound onto the car’s paint to remove small layers of clear coat. This makes small scratches and swirls in the paint disappear. Polishing improves the gloss and finish of the paint.
Waxing – Applied to give the car a glossy shine and add a protective layer to the paint. I personally use a quality hybrid ceramic wax from Turtle Wax that stays for 6-9 months minimum. This specific wax can be applied to glass and trim in addition to paint, and smells great!. There are a variety of waxes and 2-in-1 wash & wax products that work well in different circumstances.
Other exterior services that can be done include trim dressing, engine bay detailing, headlight polishing/restoration, exhaust polishing, weather stripping lubrication, and so much more. Many of which I currently do and some I plan to offer in the future!
2. By mobile do you mean you drive to me?
Yes, I am mobile and will drive to your house or place of work. Mo’s Auto detailing is only mobile and does not have an associated shop.
3. Do I need to provide power/water? (NOPE)
Access to utilities is not required as the detailing van is equipped with water and power via a generator. While a power outlet is not necessary, it is preferred where available to minimize unnecessary use of the generator. a water spigot is not necessary as well as the van has a 70 gallon water tank, enough to do 3-4 vehicles per day. in some rare instances it may be helpful when water gets low.
4. Do I have to have my entire vehicle done?
Not at all, you may only want just the outside or inside done. One popular choice is to have a deep interior cleaning with a quicker/lighter exterior detail. Some might even want one specific part of each section (i.e. just the carpets, specific stains, specific exterior work, or just a mild cleaning on the inside or outside). For this reason, I have a variable hourly rate in additon to all other pricing which can be found unde the main and deep dive section of the website!
5. Do you do Ceramic Coatings? PPF? Paint Correction
At the moment I do not offer any of these services. I do have plans to offer entry level ceramic coatings in the future. Furthermore, I have a very capable orbital polisher with experience using mild and abrasive compounds, fine polishes, and liquid Polish & Wax products. This will be offered as a service in the future with more credentials. I do not do high end multi-step paint correction or PPF’s, only an experienced and reputable shop can offer that.
6. How do I Book?
The best way to book is through the online square portal (notice: It is a booking request that also has to be accepted, in a small fraction of bookings I may have to move them around) . Booking is also available via text; number listed on contact page. There you can find the different services offered and the best available times in the next two week period. The booking system is mindful of time and contains estimated hours per vehicle/service. This option was made to make it easy for people to see what availability I have over the next two weeks without having to wait for me to respond. Sometimes I am on a job that take several hours or in a location where I have poor service, and for that reason the online appointment system is wonderful! It allows you to book where there is availability around other bookings while being cautious of timing.
For that reason, I may still be able to fit you in if online system shows no time. For example if I am available at 4:30 pm on a certain day where I am booked in the morning but the service you selected is an estimated 4.5 hour service it may show that day as full if the cutoff time is 8pm. If you have a preferred time I encourage you to text (ideally not call) and I will get back to you as soon as I can. I can also be reached on instagram messenger
